DEATH OF THE BUSHRANGER BEN HALL. [FROM OUR FORBES TELEGRAPHIC CORRESPONDENT] Forbes, Saturday, noon. BEN HALL, the bushranger, was shot dead yesterday morning at dawn of day by sub inspector David-son, sergeant Condell, and several troopers, on the Billibong Creek, about 12 miles from Forbes. Hall's horses were first seen in hobbles about ten o clock on the previous night, and shortly afterwards himself, but he was not identified until next morning, when walking towards his horses Mr Davidson called upon him to stand, but he commenced running, whereupon Mr Davidson fired and hit him. Sergeant Condell next fired two shots at him, both of which hit and at the same moment four troopers who were posted in a scrub in the direction whither he was running, came forth and shot him down. Hall received about thirty shots into his body. He died immediately, and his remains were brought into Forbes during the dead of night. An enquiry into the circumstances has just been held by the Police Magistrate. Seventy four pounds in money (£71), a gold watch, three gold watch chains, and three loaded revolvers, the miniature of a young female, and other sundries were found upon his person. Hall was alone when shot. Dunn was seen by himself in another direction yesterday. Text source: Trove digital newspapers http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/13112598 |
